European institutions have called on the EU to formally exclude education from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.
The European Civil Society Platform on Lifelong Learning, representing 45,000 educational institutions including schools and universities, published a paper on 12 February explaining why education should be excluded from ongoing TTIP negotiations with the United States.
Eucis-LLL warns that if education is not excluded, multinational companies could be allowed to bid for educational contracts from member states. It adds that, as seen in the US, private companies could then sue member states attempting to regain public control of educational institutions.
