Commission told to heed citizens’ ideas

The European ombudsman Emily O’Reilly has said that the European Commission should take better account of issues raised under European Citizens’ Initiatives.

In a statement released on 6 March, O’Reilly said the Commission should do more to push political debate on issues raised by the ECI, and help organisers to “feel that their efforts to mobilise one million signatures are worthwhile”.

An investigation into how the functionality of the ECI could be improved was launched by O’Reilly on her own initiative in December 2014, and included a public consultation. The inquiry, which closed on 4 March, made a total of 11 suggestions for improvement to the Commission, which will be reviewing the ECI regulation later this year.
