Member states approve GM crops law

The European Council has given the final approval to legislation allowing member states to each decide whether or not they cultivate genetically modified crops.

The legislation received the final approval of the Council on 2 March, after getting the green light of the European Parliament on January. According to a statement issued by the Council, the directive will come into force this spring, 20 days after its publication in the Office Journal of the EU.

The directive gives national governments the opportunity to decide if they want to cultivate GM crops or ban them on their own environmental policy grounds or for other reasons, such as their socio-economic impact or farm policy objectives.
