EU launches international effort to map Atlantic Ocean

The European Commission has announced it will team up with the United States and Canada to study the Atlantic Ocean.

The sea-bed mapping expedition, announced on 16 April, will begin in June this year. The exercise will involve scientists from all three countries. Using the Irish vessel RV Celtic Explorer, the project will collect information on the sea floor to aid the sustainable management of the Atlantic and provide data for use by marine industries.

The project is the first initiative to be announced under the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance, an international agreement between the EU, the US and Canada that was signed in Galway in May 2013. The alliance aims to promote understanding of the North Atlantic region and the sustainable management of its resources.
