Varoufakis calls for EU reform

The former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has said he will push for a more unified, democratic EU under a political movement to be launched in February.

A draft manifesto for the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 was released online, after Varoufakis told the Italian newspaper L’Espresso about his plan for a new political movement in an interview 24 December. According to the manifesto, the EU requires a “surge of democracy" to tackle the increasing authoritarian approach of EU officials, and the rising popularity of nationalist parties.

In the document, Varoufakis calls for changes that include live streaming of all European Council meetings and full transparency within ongoing trade negotiations between the EU and the US. “The democratisation of the EU must start immediately in order to chisel away at the institutionalised resistance that must be overcome before Europe goes past the point of no return”, the manifesto states.
