Slovenia is one of four member states in eastern Europe significantly outperforming the region in R&D spending relative to GDP.
Slovenia is the top performer, recording 2.4 per cent of GDP on R&D, the latest report from Eurostat says. Others doing well are the Czech Republic (2 per cent), Estonia (1.4 per cent) and Hungary (1.4 per cent).
These countries buck the trend amongst newer member states, which generally perform poorly in R&D investment and associated success. The topic is high on the EU agenda at the moment, amid concerns about the extremely poor rates of participation from eastern Europe in Horizon 2020.
