EU research and innovation commissioner Carlos Moedas has reportedly turned down an opportunity to swap his portfolio for one focused on digital developments.
Moedas was offered the digital portfolio by European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker but turned it down because he does not want to drop his work on research and innovation, the news website Politico reported on 21 November.
The Portuguese commissioner has dedicated much energy over the past two years to planning a European Innovation Council to improve European support for co-called ‘disruptive’ innovation. A pilot for the EIC is due to begin next year, and could be part of Moedas’s apparent reluctance to abandon his portfolio.
