The availability of neutron-scattering facilities in Europe will halve within the next 10-15 years unless substantial steps are taken, an expert group has warned.
The Neutron Landscape Group, an expert group of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, issued the warning in a report on the status and future of neutron scattering facilities in Europe, which was published on 4 July.
The report says that Europe has led the field in neutron-based research for over 40 years due to it being home to the world’s two leading neutron sources, as well as several medium-sized facilities, but that two thirds of these are about 40-50 years old and most will close within the next 10 years.
