Romanian biologist named as research deputy

The European Commission has appointed deputy directors-general to both its research and innovation directorate general and the Joint Research Centre.

Ruxandra Draghia-Akli, a Romanian molecular biologist, has been appointed deputy director-general of the research and innovation DG as of 1 September, a position that is being provisionally filled by the DG’s director general Robert-Jan Smits.

Draghia-Akli is currently director of health in the research DG, where she leads a team of 150 people and oversees an annual budget of €1.3 billion. Prior to joining the Commission in 2009, she was vice-president of a biotech company.
