Søren Pind and Frédérique Vidal, the Danish and French research and higher education ministers, have said that barriers between higher education and research must be removed to boost economic growth.
Research and higher education are often treated separately in Europe, and a structural shift is needed to change this, Pind and Vidal wrote in an opinion article published on the news website EU Observer on 1 December.
The EU’s organisation and decision-making have a particularly bad record in this respect, the ministers said. Within the European Commission, research and education sit in different departments with different commissioners at their head.
