Estonia claims presidency success

Estonia’s presidency of the European Council, which covered the second half of 2017, delivered advances in digitisation and tackling climate change, it has claimed.

EU leaders and ministers achieved “significant progress” on digitisation under Estonia’s leadership, the presidency said on 29 December. It highlighted agreements reached on the free movement of data and the development of the 5G mobile network.

In addition, member states agreed on “all of the aspects” of meeting their climate change commitments, according to the presidency. Jüri Ratas, Estonia’s prime minister, said in a statement that the EU is “more united and better prepared to tackle both digital and climate change” following his country’s period of leadership.
