Council rejects Parliament’s 2020 budget plan: crunch talks ensue

Tug-of-war incoming over plans for bumper EU budget to cap seven-year cycle

MEPs and representatives of EU member states have paved the way for their yearly tussle over the bloc’s annual budget, by adopting widely diverging stances on overall spending and the allocation for R&D.

The European Parliament wants commitments totalling €171 billion, including €14.2bn for the Horizon 2020 R&D programme and €2.96bn for the Erasmus+ programme that funds exchange schemes for students and teachers.
