Industry commissioner nominee scrapes over first hurdle

French industrialist Thierry Breton promises to recuse himself from decisions affecting his former company

Thierry Breton, the replacement nominee to become EU internal market commissioner with responsibility for industry, digitisation, space and defence research, has been cleared of financial conflict of interest concerns by the narrowest of margins.

The Frenchman, who resigned as chief executive of IT giant Atos in October to enable him to become a commissioner, has promised not to participate in any European Commission decision directly affecting his former company.
