Battle over Hungarian academy’s independence flares again

Disputes over the independence of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences continue, as talks over reforms to its network of research institutes reach deadlock.

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences said in a statement on 28 May that legal and governance changes to its research network, as proposed by the Hungarian government, were “clearly unconstitutional” and do not guarantee its basic funding. 

Although the ongoing battle between the academy and the government has often centred on funding, an academy representative told Research Europe that “this is not about money, it’s about control”.
