Academia waits as Brexit talks deadline brings no breakthrough

EU says ‘intensive’ talks can continue, but both sides call on each other to change position

EU leaders have said they are willing to continue talks on a relationship agreement with the UK, but both they and the UK prime minister Boris Johnson called on each other to change their approach after a 15 October deadline set by Johnson elapsed without an agreement being reached.

Continuing research collaboration between the UK and EU is tied up in the talks. In September the UK removed one hurdle to such collaboration when it confirmed it would accept the jurisdiction of the EU Court of Justice over Horizon Europe, the 2021-27 EU R&D programme, which the UK hopes to participate in though formal ‘association’.
