Parliament tables proposal adding €9 billion to overall budget

Negotiations on the 2021-27 EU budget are “back to square one”, Johan Van Overtveldt, chair of the European Parliament’s budget committee, has said ahead of an informal meeting on the subject on 14 October.

After MEPs rejected the latest European Commission proposal, put forward on 12 October, Van Overtveldt complained in a letter on 13 October to the Council of the EU’s head negotiator that the proposal did not include the option to raise funding for programmes the Parliament considered to be priorities. These include the Horizon Europe R&D programme and the Erasmus+ mobility programme for student exchange.
