MEPs reiterate demand for EU budget contingency plan

Parliament wants ‘safety net’ in place for Covid-19 recovery

Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgets have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the European Commission submitting a contingency plan for the EU’s 2021-27 budget by 15 June, in case negotiations on the budget fail to reach a deal.

MEPs have made similar requests in recent months, but the Commission has refused to present a contingency, even as national leaders repeatedly failed to overcome their differences on the Commission’s first budget proposal. Now the Commission is due to present another proposal, in light of the economic consequences of Covid-19, in the coming days.
