New EU presidency to provide support for Horizon Europe partnerships and European Research Area
Portugal has set out the priorities for its six-month presidency of the Council of the EU, focusing on climate action, digital resilience and strengthening the bloc’s autonomy. Council presidencies chair EU member state governments’ work on EU-related legislation and policymaking.
Speaking on 31 December, hours before Portugal took the baton from Germany, Portuguese prime minister António Costa (pictured left) said the Portuguese presidency would support the adoption of national recovery plans following the Covid-19 pandemic. Portugal will also oversee the approval of the bloc’s first climate law to make Europe carbon-neutral by 2050 and “reinforce” the EU’s strategic autonomy.
