The first payments from the EU’s enormous pandemic recovery fund have triggered mixed reactions

In the first of a new series of dispatches on the most pressing research policy issues in their countries, Research Professional News’s European correspondents take stock of the EU’s huge Covid-19 recovery fund.

The creation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility, a €672 billion programme of loans and grants to boost Europe’s Covid-ravaged economy, was controversial from the start. The programme will inject much-needed funding into research. But it also generates huge debt, and support for it has varied between nations.
