EU’s R&D leadership ‘eroding’, major report warns

Analysis finds China and the United States are pulling further ahead, particularly on technology

The EU’s position of global R&D leadership is gradually being diminished by the more rapid advances of the world’s other major economic and scientific powers, a major new report has warned.

Despite comprising just 7 per cent of the world population, the EU publishes 21 per cent of the top-cited scientific publications, according to the Science, Research and Innovation Performance report, published on 5 July.
