Lemaître proposes delaying new European Research Area priorities

Refreshed policy initiative should await incoming Commission leaders to ensure “political ownership”, says official

The top official in the European Commission’s research department has proposed delaying the next stage of the European Research Area policy initiative, according to an Austrian government write-up.

Marc Lemaître is reported to have suggested pushing a proposal for the new ERA policy agenda back from autumn 2024 to early 2025, by which time new political leaders of the Commission will be in place. The term of office for the incumbents, which do not include officials such as Lemaître, ends in October 2024.
