MEPs push for EU to have equal competence on education

Committee on Constitutional Affairs also calls for promotion of academic freedom

A group of MEPs is pushing for the EU to be made equal to the governments of its member states in having powers over education.

The EU’s laws give its institutions full control over certain areas of activity, such as the bloc’s customs union, while other areas remain fully under the power of the member states and some areas are under shared control.
