Research commissioner granted unpaid leave to potentially become Bulgarian prime minister, raising concerns in sector

Education and research groups have expressed dismay that Mariya Gabriel could leave her post of EU commissioner early after being lined up to become the next prime minister of Bulgaria.

Gabriel (pictured centre) has been nominated to become Bulgaria’s prime minister by the country’s largest political party following a national election in April.
