EU sees off bid to end animal research

Commission says science must progress to meet citizens’ demands to ban animal testing

The European Commission has sided with science groups in a battle over animal research, saying it is not possible to set a date for when the practice can be ended, even as more than one million people demanded exactly that.

Universities and research institutes joined the fray, warning in a joint statement that setting a deadline to end all work with animals “would severely confine European research, with detrimental effects for the health of European citizens”.
