EU competition chief with responsibility for R&D withdraws in bid to lead European Investment Bank

The European Commission has undergone another change in senior leadership as its executive vice-president, Margrethe Vestager, who was only recently put in charge of research and innovation policy, has stepped back to run for president of the European Investment Bank.

Vestager (pictured), who for years has served as the Commission’s competition policy chief, was also given responsibility for the EU R&I portfolio when Mariya Gabriel resigned as R&I commissioner in May to co-lead a new government in Bulgaria.
