Rise of right spurs renewed calls for centrists to defend academic freedom and EU funding

Academic leaders have expressed hope that the new crop of EU politicians ushered in by the European Parliament election will stand up in defence of research and higher education against the rise of right-wing representatives.

In the provisional results of the 6-9 June election, centrist groups clung onto the top spots in terms of the number of the MEPs elected, and are able to form a majority. But right-wing groups increased their share, mirroring rises in national polls in some countries.
