Von der Leyen wins member states’ backing for second term

Heads of EU governments also adopt new strategic agenda, with competitiveness one of three pillars

The heads of EU member state governments have agreed that they want Ursula von der Leyen to have a second term as president of the European Commission, which is due to start a new political cycle following the European Parliament election earlier this month.

If approved by the Parliament, the German former defence minister (pictured) will get another five years as probably the most important figure in EU policymaking.
