Lobby register remains weak, say observers

Lobbyism watchdogs have slammed the EU’s optimism over sign-up rates to the transparency register, saying that these continue to be abysmally low.

On 29 November, the EU published its Annual Report on the Transparency Register, which said that the number of registrants had grown by 10 per cent. However, Alter-EU, the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation, says that “hundreds of companies and lobby groups actively lobbying to influence EU decision-making, continue to boycott the register”.

Corporate Europe Observatory agreed with Alter-EU’s position, and criticised the EU report for being “self-congratulatory” in a 2 December statement.
