Commission bans chemicals in favour of bees

The European Commission is to go ahead with a two-year ban on three pesticides, on the basis of evidence they are contributing to a decline in bee populations.

The Commission’s decision follows an inconclusive vote on the proposal by representatives of the EU member states. A total of 15 countries voted to support a ban, with eight member states opposing it and four abstentions.

However, this is the second time that member states have failed to reach a qualified majority on the issue, meaning the decision falls to the Commission.
