The European Commission has concluded that money given by the French government to a research project on bio-friendly plastics and paints is in line with EU rules on state aid.
In 2013, France announced that it planned to award €43.6 million in aid to a public-private partnership behind the project, including the Institut Français des Matériaux Agro-Sourcés and the Institut d’Excellence en Énergies Décarbonées.
After examining the guidelines for using state aid for R&D and innovation, the Commission decided that state aid was in this case justified, due to market failures. Their investigation concluded that aid was necessary because this R&D project could not have launched on its own.
