Justice ministers back data protection regulation

Ministers on the Justice and Home Affairs Council are supporting the planned regulation for establishing an EU data protection framework.

The European Data Protection Regulation aims to protect the personal information of European citizens. But research organisations—including the UK charitable funder the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences—have expressed concerns that it will impede the use of data for research.

The Council of Justice said that work on the proposed regulation should continue in the same manner, looking into issues such as pseudonymisation of data (replacing identifiable data with artificial information), the transfer of personal data to private organisations, and the obligations of data controllers and processors.
