European energy ministers have called for better governance of climate issues and energy, which would give countries more rights to decide how to go about meeting their targets for 2030.
National government representatives agreed on 4 March that progress towards a low-carbon economy needs to be affordable, and that local conditions must be considered when climate and energy policy is adopted. Ministers also called for flexibility in delivering energy objectives, meaning they want more freedom to decide through which technologies and societal changes they would meet their targets.
EU targets for 2030 include a 40 per cent cut in emissions compared with 1990. The European Commission came under fire last month for reducing a proposal for the amount of energy supplied through renewables from 30 per cent to 27 per cent. On 5 February the European Parliament voted against the Commission target, saying that it should remain at 30 per cent.
