The responsible governance of science, technology and innovation is a concept that has been gathering credence for some time in the EU. In trying to strike the right balance between risk and regulation, policymakers now seek responsible approaches that develop public knowledge of, and engagement with, such fresh fields as synthetic biology and nanotechnology.
But the impacts of these technologies and their application to major problems facing society will not be limited to the EU. Increasingly, responsible research and innovation is taking on a global dimension.
