Citizens’ initiative against animal testing reaches Commission

Stop Vivisection, a European Citizens’ Initiative to ban animal experimentation, has been submitted to the European Commission amid criticism from EU research organisations.

The initiative was presented to the Commission on 3 March, after collecting 1.15 million signatures in support. It proposes replacing the EU directive on animal experimentation with legislation banning animal research.

However, a coalition of 63 public and private research-related organisations issued a statement on 4 March calling the Commission and the European Parliament to reject the initiative, warning that it would endanger research in biology and medicine.
