EU proposes phase-down of ozone damaging chemicals

The European Commission has submitted a proposal to amend the Montreal Protocol and limit the use of ozone-damaging chemicals.

If the proposal goes ahead, the EU will embark on a schedule to phase down the use and production of chemicals which deplete the Earth’s ozone layer, starting in 2019 and ending in 2034.

Industrial countries have been called on to take the lead in phasing down the production and use of harmful hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), found in refrigeration and air-conditioning units.
