Data security guardian sets up ethics panel

The European Data Protection Supervisor has appointed a six-person Ethics Advisory Group to help it consider the relationship between human rights and technology.

The group will help the EDPS develop a “new ethical approach” over the coming years, so that it can ensure individuals are not treated merely as data subjects in the digital environment, the EDPS said on 28 January. Other experts from outside the group will also be asked to contribute to the group’s work, which the EDPS said will be made public in the form of reports and meetings.

Members include Luciano Floridi, director of research at the University of Oxford’s Oxford Internet Institute, and Jaron Lanier, a writer and businessman.
