The EU and Switzerland are set to link emissions trading systems in an effort to cut the costs of fighting climate change.
Companies that emit carbon will be able to trade their allowances between the Swiss and European systems under a European Commission proposal published on 16 August. The proposal follows years of negotiations between the EU and Switzerland.
The Commission proposal will now be discussed by the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament, which are expected to pass it by the end of the year. The agreement is meant to enter into force at the start of 2019.
