Debates on EU copyright legislation that could massively disrupt research are about to reach a critical phase.
A proposed copyright directive has been dividing opinion since the European Commission presented draft legislation in September 2016. Now a critical vote at the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs looks likely to take place in March.
Alea López de San Román, a policy officer at the League of European Research Universities, said research organisations were deeply concerned about the proposals, and were putting their faith in the legal affairs committee to sway Parliament and the ultimate outcome. “We are waiting for the committee to take the decisive step and make the legislation really fit for research and innovation,” she said.
