Work on European Research Area to be stepped up

National governments in the Council of the EU are set to back a call to increase the circulation of academics and knowledge in the European Research Area.

Properly establishing an ERA, a region in which knowledge and people travel freely, would decisively increase the effectiveness of European research and innovation, according to draft Council conclusions published on 22 November.

Ministerial meetings on the ERA should therefore be scheduled regularly from 2020 onwards to ensure this is achieved, the draft recommends. At present, such meetings take place on an ad hoc basis.
