Food regulator taken to court over science data

A group of four left-wing MEPs has initiated legal proceedings against the European Food Safety Authority over an alleged lack of transparency around pesticide safety studies.

The Greens and European Free Alliance political group said in a statement on 11 September that the MEPs, who belong to the group, brought the case over Efsa’s “refusal to provide the public with access to crucial studies regarding the impacts of [the pesticide] glyphosate on human health”.

The studies referred to are safety studies commissioned by companies intending to sell pesticides containing glyphosate on the EU market. Under EU law, companies are required to pay for studies to demonstrate the safety of the chemicals used in their products.
