Calls for Scientific Advice Mechanism to be conserved under new administration

The European Commission’s system for informing policymaking with research evidence—the Scientific Advice Mechanism—is only just beginning to fulfil its potential and should remain largely unchanged, participants have said.

The SAM was set up in late 2015, after new Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker decided to scrap the single chief adviser post. Ursula von der Leyen, due to succeed Juncker on 1 November, has yet to reveal her plans for science advice.
