Analysis finds long-term change needed but likely to require public support for genetically modified organisms
Overhauling the EU’s decades-old laws on genetically modified organisms—which are increasingly seen as no longer fit for purpose—could prove “very politically difficult” despite their shortcomings, according to more than 70 experts from academia and industry.
The Task Force on Sustainable Agriculture and Innovation, which is led by the think tank Re-Imagine Europa and works with learned academies and plant scientists, said in a report published on 22 July that there was “a clear dissatisfaction with the existing EU GMO regulatory system, especially from a longer-term perspective”.
