New intellectual property law could “severely impede scientific freedom”, academies say

Europe’s learned academies have warned EU lawmakers to avoid introducing intellectual property rights for machine-generated data, saying such a move could “severely impede scientific freedom”.

“Unfettered access to such data is essential to many fields of science,” the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (Allea) said in feedback on a draft law it published on 2 September.
