MEPs seek to strengthen support for research in draft AI rules

European Parliament committees demand public funding and other EU support for research on artificial intelligence

MEPs have proposed stronger support for research and innovation in EU legislation being developed to regulate artificial intelligence.

The European Commission first proposed an AI Act in 2021 to regulate the technology based on the risks of its intended use. It said then that “research for legitimate purposes in relation to such AI systems should not be stifled” if it does not risk harming people.
