Lars Anell, the chairman of the Swedish Research Council (VR), has been appointed by the Swedish government as chief negotiator at the European Spallation Source project.

Anell will be responsible for negotiating with the 17 countries that are participating in the establishment and running of the large-scale neutron scattering infrastructure to be built in Lund from 2013 at an estimated cost of €1.5 billion. The negotiations are expected to lead to a finalised agreement for the project’s financing and management by March 2012.
