Auditors: Sweden needs climate R&D strategy

The Swedish National Audit Office has called for a national climate research strategy to ensure research efforts match with the country's goals of cutting emissions.

In its report published on 6 March the auditors say that despite an increase in climate research funding it is “unclear” whether the research is coordinated with climate policy. They would also like a “comprehensive” account of the costs and contributions of climate change research.

Swedish climate research received 2 billion kroner (€220m) in funding in 2010. That is almost 7 per cent of the government’s overall budget for research that year.
