Sweden’s research bill to boost competition

Sweden’s government plans to allocate more of universities' block research grants through competition in a dedicated research bill due to be published in October.

The country’s universities and university colleges receive 13 billion kronor (€1.5bn) annually in direct research funding. The amount currently allocated through competition is 10 per cent of the total. The bill will stipulate a higher percentage, says Katarina Bjelke, Director General at the Swedish Education Ministry.
