Sweden takes measures to bring research and teaching closer together

The Swedish government is planning to create an education research institution—skolforskningsinstitut—to bring research projects closer to teaching.

The institute will develop a scientific approach to education, with the aim of increasing teaching effectiveness and improving learning outcomes for students. Through the institute, teachers will be more involved in posing questions for research to address, the government said.

Sweden’s education minister Jan Björklund said that the country’s performance in education had been in decline for two decades, particularly in core subjects such as mathematics, science and reading comprehension. Sweden’s lax attitude towards school attendance is worrying, and Swedish students top the charts for lateness, he said.
