Vetenskapsrådet increases spending

Sweden’s research council Vetenskapsrådet awarded 6.4 billion Swedish kronor (€700m) in funding in 2014, a kr700m increase from 2013, the council’s annual report has revealed.

Vetenskapsrådet published its 2014 annual report on 23 February. The council funds around 2,500 researchers in Sweden, most of which are supported for investigator-driven research in which researchers themselves define the research question.

The report found that much of the funding increase between 2013 and 2014 went towards research infrastructure projects. A large chunk of the increase is attributed to the construction of the European Spallation Source in Lund, Vetenskapsrådet said. The council’s spending on the ESS more than doubled from kr370 to kr740 between 2013 and 2014.
