The Swedish Research Council has observed a decline in applications in the natural sciences.
The research council published its funding decisions for its yearly call for discovery-led proposals in the natural sciences, health, education research and the humanities between 1 November and 2 November.
In the natural sciences and engineering, which has a budget of about 1.1 billion Swedish kronor (€100 million), the council received more than 1,700 applications and funded 340—giving a 19 per cent success rate. The number of applications was about 100 fewer than in the previous year, which the council attributed to its new application requirements.
